He got into music at a young age which eventually lead him to Nashville where he started his career writing hit songs for other artists such as the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Highway 101, and John Conlee. In 1990 Kix teamed with Ronnie Dunn to form Brooks & Dunn, who are the highest selling duo in the history of country music. They sold more than 30 million records, won more than 75 major industry awards, and had 20 #1 hits during their 20-year run together.
In 2006 Kix took over the hosting reins of the long-running syndicated radio program, American Country Countdown, where every week he counts country music’s Top 30 songs. Kix is also the host of Kickin’ It With Kix, a fresh, fun, upbeat approach to overnights that brings together country music’s top celebrities, hit music, and the fans. The broadcast industry has taken note and honored Kix with the CMA National Broadcast Personality of the Year Award in 2009, 2011, and 2013, making him the first person to ever win a CMA Award in both the artist and broadcast categories. Kix won the ACM Radio Award for National Personality in 2021.
Never one to stand still, Kix ventured into the movie business with his production company Team Two Entertainment where you will find him in front of and behind the camera. In July 2015, Steak Out With Kix Brooks premiered on Cooking Channel. The series featured Kix setting out across the country to find some of America’s best steakhouses.
Additionally, Kix raises Beefmaster cattle on his farm just outside of Nashville and is also a founding partner of Arrington Vineyards a highly successful winery and special events venue in Arrington, TN.

In December 2014 Kix was named the first recipient of the Country Music Association’s Humanitarian Award.
In 2015, after a five-year hiatus, Brooks & Dunn reunited and joined forces with their close friend Reba McEntire for Reba + Brooks & Dunn: Together In Vegas, a Las Vegas residency at The Colosseum at Caesar’s Palace. The extremely popular residency ran for nearly seven years, wrapping up in December 2021 as the longest running country music residency in Las Vegas.
In 2019 Brooks & Dunn released their collaboration project REBOOT, which debuted at No. one on Billboard’s top country albums and earned the duo their 10th Billboard 200 Top 10 album. That same year, the duo was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in the “Modern Era Artist” category.
